As we come to the end of another term, we reflect on the teaching and learning that has occurred. A celebration of this learning can be seen in the comprehensive reports that you have received detailing your child’s progress. I thank teachers for the time and effort taken to complete these personalised reports. As I read each child’s report I was impressed with the skills and understandings that students have been developing in each year level. Some students have conquered the learning and some are continuing to develop understanding through further practice.
Other learning has occurred outside of the classroom. School is a rich place where learning can occur. Some of the extra curricula learning that may have happened:
- Chess Club
- Lego League
- Geologist visit x2
- Kelsi fitness classes x2
- Soccer clinic
- Brixhibition
- Cross Country
- Live Life Full Day
- Jack Jumpers visit
- Reconciliation week activities
- Fireman Craig visits
- Mothers Day activities
- 5/6 Camp
- Hot lunches
We continue to be proud of the range and number of opportunities that are provided for students to learn at St Joseph’s. This happens due to the interest, motivation and commitment of the staff that turn up each day. We have a real and genuine focus on learning and are invested in each and every child in discovering their interests and potential. Thank you for allowing this privilege to work alongside your child. We look forward to meeting with you in person for our parent teacher nights.
Mr Aidan Quinn has informed us that he will be finishing up at St Joseph's Rosebery and Queenstown at the end of this term. Aidan will be moving back to the mainland to spend quality time with family. We thank Aidan for his work as our Physical Education teacher over the past 18 months. Please join me in wishing him all the best in his future endeavours. We will be looking to fill his position by the start of Term 3 so there is minimal impact on student learning
Phones - smart watches
We have noticed of late a growing number of students that are bringing mobile phones to school. Students are not allowed to have mobile phones during the school day. We ask that if your family has chosen to have your child bring a mobile phone to school, it needs to be left with your child’s class teacher (5/6) or the school office. This allows the school to keep the phones safe whilst they are at school.
If your child is lucky enough to have a smart watch, the settings that allow communication and games must be deactivated during school hours. If parents and/or students need to make contact with each other through the day the school office remains the only place where this should occur.

On Friday 28th June, Sassafras went to Lyell Wing to visit the residents. We sang some of our favourite songs - ‘A School Prayer’ and ‘These Hands’ by Andrew Chinn as well as a new favourite ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ by Matt Maher. Students showed some of their letter craft they have been making - ‘e’ for elephant and ‘g’ for gorilla. Their favourite activity was doing puzzles. They had a great time and look forward to going back again next term.
On Wednesday, 19th June 2024 Myrtle and King Billy saw Eleanor and Declan from Renison which is in between Zeehan and Rosebery. They told us it was a tin mine. Declan is a Geologist and Eleanor is a Mining Engineer. Tin is used to make solder and statues. We had to draw rocks at the end and some were stripey and spotty. Declan does not go underground, he goes bush walking. His job is to find the minerals. Eleanor's job is to work out where to blow up the minerals. Some people stood up at the front of the room and got pictures. We had to guess which order they were in and guess what? We got it right. They work for Bluestone. There were various rocks. Some were small and some were big.

On Wednesday, 19 June 2024 Myrtle and King Billy invited two workers from Bluestone mine who work at Renison to St Joseph's Queenstown. Declan is a Geologist and Eleanor is a Mining Engineer. Declan showed us different rocks and the patterns on them. There were spotty ones, stripy ones and more. Declan also showed us photos of the mine. He told us he gets paid to bush walk. Eleanor showed us what she does. She codes sometimes and plans what they are going to mine in the future and places they're going to mine. We also planned out maps of the differences about the rocks and the properties of them. Some of the rocks were magnetic and some weren't. They told us the rocks with big crystals were good for tin and the ones with small crystals aren't good for tin.

We learnt about stopes which are holes. My favourite were the bombs. We learnt about Renison.

They taught us that tin makes lots of stuff and they used explosives to make tunnels and stopes which are downward tunnels. They let us look at rocks and see if there is minerals and some were magnetic. They told us that tin can make solder which is in game boards and make tins, car batteries, statues and ceilings. Declan said he gets paid to bush walk.

Declan and Eleanor taught us that Renison produces four per cent of the world's tin. They showed us what the mine will look like in twelve years.

I liked how we looked at rocks and how they do the explosions by putting explosives down a hole. We had to get pictures and some of us held a picture and we had to get the picture in order. We got it all right. It was so much fun. We got in groups of three and went to rocks. We got a piece of paper and coloured in 12 spaces the same colour. One of the rocks was magnetic to a pencil that was metal. I loved the rocks.

I liked the part where they put the hole in the wall in the mine and put the explosives inside and it explodes everywhere. I tested the rocks with magnets to see if they were magnetic. By Kysen |
On Thursday 27 June 2024 we had two visitors who talked about rocks and fossils and mines. Ivan came on his birthday and Geoff gave us dinosaur poop and we thought it was a peanut. On Thursday 27th of June 2024 Myrtle and King Billy went into the COLA and there were two people waiting. One was named Ivan from TMEC and surprisingly it was his birthday! We also had a person named Geoff from Sibanye Stillwater. Ivan drew a map and we brainstormed where mines are in Tasmania. We brainstormed what jobs at a mine you can do. Try and guess what the most high paying job is? Well it is actually a cleaner! Wow! They get paid more than Ivan’s job which is going around high schools and showing them the jobs in the mine you can do. Geoff showed us fossils he collected OMG! I can’t even find a rock let alone a fossil! He showed us an AMAZING model of a mine then he passed around a fossil and made everyone guess what it is. Well it is actually an old dinosaur poop! Blehh! Some of us even smelt it! We also thought it was a peanut! My favourite part was the model of the mine. Ok bye! By Olivia |

This term, we were fortunate to host Football Australia's Miniroos Clinic for our students in Kinder to Year 4. Every Wednesday afternoon for 6 weeks, the squad of 18 learnt to kick, pass and dribble their way around the field with greater focus and precision. Every player was acknowledged on how far their skills had come along in this period of time. Clearly, practice makes perfect and it's hoped that the next generation of Socceroos or Matilda's may be in our midst. We'd like to thank our coach - Jesse - for his preparation and commitment to running the sessions with us. We look forward to seeing what we can be offered later in the year.
