Bluestone Visit
On Wednesday, 19th June 2024 Myrtle and King Billy saw Eleanor and Declan from Renison which is in between Zeehan and Rosebery. They told us it was a tin mine. Declan is a Geologist and Eleanor is a Mining Engineer. Tin is used to make solder and statues. We had to draw rocks at the end and some were stripey and spotty. Declan does not go underground, he goes bush walking. His job is to find the minerals. Eleanor's job is to work out where to blow up the minerals. Some people stood up at the front of the room and got pictures. We had to guess which order they were in and guess what? We got it right. They work for Bluestone. There were various rocks. Some were small and some were big.

On Wednesday, 19 June 2024 Myrtle and King Billy invited two workers from Bluestone mine who work at Renison to St Joseph's Queenstown. Declan is a Geologist and Eleanor is a Mining Engineer. Declan showed us different rocks and the patterns on them. There were spotty ones, stripy ones and more. Declan also showed us photos of the mine. He told us he gets paid to bush walk. Eleanor showed us what she does. She codes sometimes and plans what they are going to mine in the future and places they're going to mine. We also planned out maps of the differences about the rocks and the properties of them. Some of the rocks were magnetic and some weren't. They told us the rocks with big crystals were good for tin and the ones with small crystals aren't good for tin.

They taught us that tin makes lots of stuff and they used explosives to make tunnels and stopes which are downward tunnels. They let us look at rocks and see if there is minerals and some were magnetic. They told us that tin can make solder which is in game boards and make tins, car batteries, statues and ceilings. Declan said he gets paid to bush walk.

Declan and Eleanor taught us that Renison produces four per cent of the world's tin. They showed us what the mine will look like in twelve years.

I liked how we looked at rocks and how they do the explosions by putting explosives down a hole. We had to get pictures and some of us held a picture and we had to get the picture in order. We got it all right. It was so much fun. We got in groups of three and went to rocks. We got a piece of paper and coloured in 12 spaces the same colour. One of the rocks was magnetic to a pencil that was metal. I loved the rocks.

I liked it when we got to look at the rocks and see what one is magnetic and not magnetic.

I liked the part where they put the hole in the wall in the mine and put the explosives inside and it explodes everywhere. I tested the rocks with magnets to see if they were magnetic. By Kysen |
